Is This Epsom Salt's Most Interesting Use?

It was first devised 60 years ago and since then has enjoyed a rise, decline and subsequent resurgence in popularity.

What is it?  A flotation tank - and the use of Epsom Salt has been pivotal in making the tanks more user-friendly since neuro-psychiatrist John Lilly's pioneering tank back in 1954.

Back then the tank, both lightless and soundless, was developed to create an environment which cut off an individual from all external stimuli.  This sensory deprivation allowed Lilly to study how consciousness was related to the brain.

In the 1970's, scientists from the University of British Columbia studied the therapeutic benefits of using a flotation tank, naming their technique "Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy" (REST).

It was found that by spending an hour in an isolation tank, individuals would become more relaxed, more creative and stronger - both physically and mentally.

Initially the therapeutic effects were outweighed by the stress of having to be completely submerged in the tank - a combination of total submersion along with having to wear uncomfortable clothing and breathing through a mask led to people being afraid of drowning in the tank.

Thanks to the addition of Epsom Salt, tanks are far more comfortable now - the salt water's density means that the individual simply floats with their face above the water.  People can choose between total darkness or different mood lighting and, if wanted, soft music can be played.

The ears are submerged meaning that hearing is greatly reduced and, because the water is maintained at skin temperature, a constant 94 degrees Fahrenheit, the subject's skin sensation is also reduced, causing a blurring of boundaries between the body and water.

The effects are akin to deep meditation and people who have experienced it come back time and time again to enjoy the extreme relaxation it offers.

Veronica Malachowski, who works at a flotation centre in Fremont, America, has had over 50 floats and says it makes her feel "infinite", and that, during the experience, you can "hear your own heart rhythm and you can hear your own blood flow through your veins."

Another frequent user, Tami Gibson, explained: "I don't think I was asleep but I don't think I was awake." Tami added, "you haven't felt this sensation since you were in the womb."
