Using Epsom Salt to Treat Muscle Injuries

Most of us have suffered from muscle strains at some point. They happen when muscle tissue tears - usually at the same place as where the muscle meets its tendon. Muscles can tear simply from the force of your muscles contracting or when they are stretched too far. However they happen - they hurt!

Relief from this pain can be an expensive business but Epsom salt, a magnesium sulphate compound, offers an inexpensive, completely natural and widely available treatment for strains all over the body.

It is widely recommended by physiotherapists and specialists and is used by athletes the world over as, not only does it soothe pain from actual tears, but it also helps revive tired muscles.

Why does it help? Well, magnesium plays an important role in the body, helping to regulate over 300 enzymes, reduce inflammation as well as helping muscle and nerve function. So, it stands to reason that when your muscles are suffering, a boost of magnesium will help.

Bathing in the compound is one of the best ways to benefit from the magnesium and sulphate as it allows the body to absorb as much magnesium as it needs through the skin.

There are a number of different ways to harness the power of an Epsom salt solution:

• Mix two tablespoons of Epsom salt with one cup of cold water and then soak a flannel in the solution. The flannel can then be applied to the skin as a compress.

• Add one teaspoon of Epsom salt to a cup of hot water until it dissolves, then chill the solution in the fridge for around 20 minutes to make a paste. Clean the area of skin that is sore and pat dry before applying the paste.

• Add 2 cups of Epsom salt to a warm, standard-sized bath (use more for a larger bath) and soak for about 15 minutes, two or three times a week. The salt dissolves quicker if you pour it under running water.

• Pour one cup of Epsom salt into a foot spa (you can use a tub or a bowl) filled with warm water and soak to soothe achy feet.

Epsom salt is available from a wide range of shops and pharmacies although it is important to remember to check with your Dr or pharmacist if you are at all unsure whether it is suitable for you.
